What the procedure involves.
High-quality dental implant procedures in China using premium materials (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem) at a fraction of Western prices. China has become a top destination for dental tourism with advanced digital scanning, 3D printing technology, and experienced implantologists who perform thousands of procedures annually. Major cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou are especially popular due to their proximity to Hong Kong.
Step by step.
Initial Consultation & Imaging
Comprehensive oral examination with cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan to assess bone density, gum health, and implant positioning. The dentist creates a digital treatment plan and provides a detailed cost estimate. If bone grafting is needed, this will be identified at this stage.
Implant Placement Surgery
A titanium implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia (sedation available). The procedure uses computer-guided surgery for precise placement. A temporary crown or healing cap is placed over the implant site.
Osseointegration (Healing Period)
The titanium implant gradually fuses with the surrounding jawbone in a process called osseointegration. During this period, patients return home and follow care instructions. Regular check-ins can be done remotely via photos and video calls.
Abutment & Impression
After the implant has integrated with the bone, an abutment (connector piece) is attached. Digital impressions are taken to custom-fabricate the final crown, ensuring perfect color matching and bite alignment.
Final Crown Placement
The custom porcelain or zirconia crown is permanently attached to the abutment. The dentist checks the bite, adjusts if necessary, and provides aftercare instructions. The result is a natural-looking, fully functional tooth.

Got 6 implants here and saved over $35,000 compared to my dentist in California. The hospital is modern, clean, and my coordinator spoke excellent English. Two trips over 5 months — totally worth it. Used Straumann implants, same brand my US dentist recommended.

HKU Shenzhen is like a Hong Kong hospital at mainland prices. Flew from Singapore, got 3 implants over 2 visits. Staff speaks perfect English. 45 minutes from Hong Kong by train. Total cost including flights and hotel was still 70% less than Singapore prices.

West China Hospital's dental school is incredible. Got 4 implants for about $3,500 total — would have been $20k+ back home in Sydney. The only challenge was language, but the international coordinator helped with everything. Chengdu is an amazing city to recover in — the food alone makes it worth the trip!
